Kindness in card form

August 29, 2007 · Posted in Personal · 2 Comments

I got this in the mail today:

card! card!

It’s from my occupational therapist from when I had carpal tunnel at my last job. She sent a note and said she saw the engagement notice in the paper and was really excited for me. So sweet. She also said the card was made by someone in a third world country and thought I would appreciate (the artistry of) it. Sort-of random acts of kindness are the best. Completely made my day.

Oh–it’s exactly one month until the wedding. Am I anywhere near where I should be with planning the shindig? Not even close. Tell me to get the invitations done before I get distracted with the next thing on my list.

Floral dilemma

August 16, 2007 · Posted in Personal · 2 Comments

Flowers are the bain of my existence right now. Anyone know of someplace that I could
1) place an order this late in the game
2) spend very little money while having it look pretty

I’m pretty stressed about it since my former plan fell through. If you know of anything, please leave a comment or email. Big big thank you in advance.

We’re in the paper today. Yeah, we’re soooo popular here that people are actually interested in our engagement. Naw, we took out an ad in the celebrations section. Take a peek.

Bridge.

We took a drive up to Minneapolis to run some errands, see some of Derek’s friends and take a look at the 35W bridge. It was a tough trip seeing the bridge. I didn’t have my camera along, but Derek did…

Bridge

We were surprised how close we were able to get at this side. We saw them move a Jaguar and two trucks off it. But the main thing we were shocked by were the number of gawkers (and yes, we realized we contributed to them).

Bridge

It was eerily quiet on this bridge. Tons of people, but everyone was talking like they were in a library. A very somber moment. Derek has more photos. Go here to see them.

Links out of writing laziness

I haven’t been in much of a writing mood lately due to finishing up moving, getting the new place how we want it, and just generally not feeling like it. Here’s a bunch of links I’ve been coming across the past however-long-it’s-been. Enjoy.

Creative Techs
This site has been pretty useful to me lately with plenty of tips and easy-to-follow tutorials for Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and the like.

Eyes Wide Shut
This was a feature in Life Magazine in 1947 where cartoonists drew their famous characters while blindfolded. More interesting to see than it sounds.

Delight
The girls’ equivalent of Woot.

Ikea Shopping Tips
Via the Consumerist, this article tells you about the hidden easter eggs, if you will, from a shopping trip to Ikea.

Anti-Plagiarism Tools
Via The Blog Herald, 20 ways to keep people from ripping off your content.

Deleted Images
You can send in your photographic misfires and have them proudly displayed with equally perplexing images.

Bubble Scope
I want. I used something similar when shooting virtual tours for the GG. You can really do some creative things with it.

Firework Art
I love the look of these things. The colors and simplicity are fantastic. Also, it reminds me of the many Fourth of Julys spent at my grandparents’ house in Nebraska, where fireworks were actually sold legally.

Rearview
Looks like they take submissions for a photo of the day. While some seemed like they were trying a bit too hard to be ‘arty,’ overall I found them very appealing. So much so that I’m feeling an overwhelming urge to pack up and move to Chicago. Or at least use up the rest of my vacation time from work and visit for a bit.

Photobooth
Tells you where photo booths are located around the world.

Forget the Film, Watch the Titles
Highlights creative movie title sequences through the years.

Pink Prank Project
A group of people pulled a prank on their friend by turning his room into an art installation while he was away.

The Shatner Show
An art exhibit featuring the likeness of William Shatner. Nice…

Logomotto
Randomly posts a mish-mash of well-known corporate logos and taglines. My favorites were anything involving the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
