Quote of the day
[In reference to a story on public radio about GM's massive loss over the
past year--as an answer to the question "how can they be optimistic?"]
Guy being interviewed: “What’s $39 billion among friends?”
re: Super Tuesday (a bit late)

And tightly keeping my fingers crossed for the nomination.
The Chicagoist has a feature on Obama-inspired art: click it.
Lego man and glow in the dark cats, oh my
Australia’s ABC News published their Year in Review of offbeat stories. I knew the end of the year was good for something.

Babbys, fog and weird science
JeebusholycrapI’mexcitedfortheseguys!
Aaron and Dawn had a baby last week, and I’m so incredibly happy for them. PHOTOS! The kid is ADORABLE, Dawn looked gorgeous for having just given birth, and I can tell from the photos that Aaron hasn’t been happier. Congrats guys. I know you’re going to make amazing parents.

It’s been insanely foggy around here, and while driving this morning, I decided to take a photo. Don’t try this at home, kids.

And completely unrelated, but here’s an interesting site highlighting odd psychological studies. I was especially fascinated by the one where a neuroscientist studied his own brain after having a stroke.
…but you can’t build a city around it
A few weekends ago, while we were selling photos at the coffee shop, a reporter from the LA Times interviewed us about politics and having the caucus in Iowa. I didn’t want to say anything earlier, just in case we didn’t make it into the story. Lo and behold, we did, and we sounded a bit…uh…uninformed. I swear we said more than what was listed…and we do actually follow politics. Also, we didn’t both live in Des Moines before moving back to Mason City. I did, but Derek was up in Minneapolis. Oops. Ah well. It was certainly interesting being on the other side of the interview for once. Take a look at what was published.
** I’ve noticed that the link doesn’t work properly and they want you to sign up. Rubbish! If you want to see the story, go to latimes.com, click on Politics in the left column and scroll down to the story that mentions Mason City in the headline. Ta.
Bridge.
We took a drive up to Minneapolis to run some errands, see some of Derek’s friends and take a look at the 35W bridge. It was a tough trip seeing the bridge. I didn’t have my camera along, but Derek did…

We were surprised how close we were able to get at this side. We saw them move a Jaguar and two trucks off it. But the main thing we were shocked by were the number of gawkers (and yes, we realized we contributed to them).

It was eerily quiet on this bridge. Tons of people, but everyone was talking like they were in a library. A very somber moment. Derek has more photos. Go here to see them.
Goodnight, etc.
Yesterday was rough. We finally decided to put poor little Lizzy to sleep. She had a really long life for a rat and she wasn’t doing so well anymore. It’s such a hard decision to make, but there’s something to be said for quality of life. Poor girl. We’ll miss you, sweetie.

……….
In an effort to cheer myself up yesterday, I found a bunch of new links:
Since I haven’t made any videos in a few years I’ve been a little rusty…so I’ve been brushing up on the basics online while at work. I was looking at this site (not a bad one for beginners, btw, despite the outdated page design) and the video on this page made me laugh. Gotta love those old newsreel-type films from that era. I especially liked that the character’s name was ‘old Pete Feltman’ (same name as a buddy of mine from the former Skreak).
A funny list of Things to Avoid Buying on Amazon. I hope no one actually falls for that crap.
A gallery of small videos showing airline sickness bags that have been rigged up to move as if they are breathing/hyperventilating when open. If these were found in Boston, I’m sure the bomb squad would be all over ‘em. Click on the images of the bags to view.
A fake iPhone commercial–skillfully done using clips from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
And finally…from the BBC–footage advertising the 2012 Olympics has been pulled from tv due to causing seizures. Eep! As if the logo itself wasn’t bad enough!
Four square.
Firstly, check out this video of Ask a Ninja interviewing the guys from Blades of Glory all E!-style.
Secondly, we’ve got tickets to see Barack Obama on Wednesday. Do you?
Thirdly, last night we checked out Toast, Mason City’s only non-smoking bar, and we were wondering why it took us so long to go there. We’ll definitely have to go there again sometime soon.
Fourthly, eh, I got nuthin’.
Poor Casa
I’m so sad! One of my favorite local restaurants had a fire early this morning. Derek and I are so glad we went last night. I had a leftover taco for lunch and savored every bite. I hope they’ll be able to recover…and soon.
If I had a $1,000,000 (part 2)
For whatever reason, the story I linked to yesterday had been taken down. Here is the new link. Still tremendously funny.
